Every year, about 59,000 people worldwide die from the rabies virus, 99% of them in Asia and Africa. That is why we are joining with other organizations to conduct a large-scale rabies vaccination campaign in northern Malawi (Africa) this fall.

Rabies not only occurs in animals, but humans can also become infected after being bitten by an infected animal, for example. Rabies is one of the most dangerous and communicable diseases on earth. Thus, the virus is extremely dangerous to humans and if not acted upon appropriately, infection leads to death.

Why in Malawi?

Rabies primarily affects disadvantaged populations. A bitten person should receive PEP (medicine) within 24 hours, but people from low socioeconomic groups often experience delays in seeking and receiving PEP from health facilities. Poverty is prevalent in Malawi, so our help is desperately needed to combat this deadly disease.

How we are going to fight rabies?

The more dogs - and other animals - are protected from this deadly virus, the less the virus can get around. We at Vétérinaires Sans Frontières-NL want to vaccinate at least 80% of the dogs in northern Malawi to prevent rabies.

To realize this goal, we need you. Together we can prevent rabies in humans.
