Veterinarians Without Borders Netherlands Foundation
Mission of Veterinarians Without Borders Netherlands
At Veterinarians Without Borders, we work in remote areas in Africa. From the Netherlands, we are active in Malawi, where there is a shortage of veterinarians. When animals or people become ill, communities often do not know what to do. If an animal dies, a vital source of manure, food, and income is lost. That is why we train community animal health workers who can keep animals healthy within their own communities. We also focus on prevention through vaccinations, with a special focus on rabies in dogs and vaccinations for chickens. In this way, we work together towards a healthier future for both animals and people.
Our mission is to promote healthy animals, healthy people, and a healthy environment. We work in remote areas in Malawi where agriculture and livestock are the main sources of food and income. Healthier animals lead to more food and higher incomes for communities. In addition, rabies is still widespread among dogs in Malawi. This is a life-threatening disease for humans. That is why we vaccinate dogs against rabies, helping to prevent deaths — especially among children. By keeping animals healthy, we also create safer and healthier communities.
We support remote communities in Malawi, focusing on farmers and community animal health workers. We also aim to strengthen the position of women within these communities. Our goal is that at least half of the farmers we train as animal health workers are women. Our rabies project targets entire communities, with special attention to children. We visit villages and schools to raise awareness about rabies and safe interactions with dogs, helping to reduce infections and deaths.
At Veterinarians Without Borders, our work primarily focuses on livestock, such as cows, goats, pigs, and chickens. In addition, we vaccinate dogs and cats against rabies, train pet owners in responsible animal care, and promote awareness of animal welfare and the five freedoms.
Malawi
We run several projects in Malawi, mainly focused on training community animal health workers, who in turn train farmers to keep their livestock healthy. We also focus on eliminating rabies through vaccination campaigns and awareness programmes. Read more on our Our Projects page.
The projects’ developments can be followed via our social media. On Instagram, we are @ dierenartsenzondergrenzen.nl . On LinkedIn and Facebook, you can find us @Dierenartsen zonder Grenzen Nederland. We will regularly post updates on these platforms. You can also subscribe to our newsletter. It will reach your mailbox 3 times per year.
We are mainly active in northern Malawi, with most activities around Rumphi and Mzuzu. We also work in the Nkhata Bay District and increasingly focus on remote areas near national parks, such as Malidade, where rabies is more prevalent. In collaboration with the Rabies Task Force, we are working towards eliminating rabies across Malawi.
Donations
Great to hear you are interested in supporting us. You can make a one-time donation or become a regular donor. You can also get involved as a volunteer, veterinarian, or student, start your own fundraiser, or take part in our campaigns and activities.
We aim to allocate as much of your donation as possible directly to our projects in Malawi. However, some funds are needed to keep the organisation running, such as staff costs and fundraising or communication expenses. For a detailed overview, please see our financial report.
Unfortunately, we cannot change your donation amount ourselves. We can stop your current donation, after which you can sign up again with a new amount. Please contact us at coordinator@dierenartsenzondergrenzen.nl.
Veterinarians Without Borders has an ANBI status, which means your donation may be tax-deductible. If you choose to make a periodic donation for at least five years, the full amount may be tax-deductible without thresholds or maximum limits. The exact benefit depends on your tax bracket. Read here for more information.
Great to hear you want to support us through fundraising. Visit our What you can do page to join an existing campaign, start your own initiative, or contact one of our coordinators at coordinator@dierenartsenzondergrenzen.nl.
There are several ways to support us. You can take part in the Vaccinate for Africa campaign in June, donating €2.50 for every vaccination administered. You can also place a donation box at your clinic to collect contributions. Some practices choose to make monthly or annual donations through our donation form. As an employer, you can join The Social Handshake (see our “Support as a company” page for more information). Finally, if your practice has surplus materials, we can distribute them to organisations that need them. Please contact us at student@dierenartsenzondergrenzen.nl.
