With this project, we aim to improve the income and nutritional status of 1,500 smallholder farming households in Malawi. By focusing on animal health services, dairy processing, and market access, we strengthen the self-reliance of farming families.
In northern Malawi, livestock plays a crucial role in food security and income generation. At the same time, farmers face major challenges, such as limited access to veterinary services, high livestock mortality rates, food waste due to lack of refrigeration, and restricted market access. Climate change — including droughts and floods — further increases their vulnerability.
Through this project, we strengthen local veterinary care by training Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs), support farmers in processing milk into yoghurt and cheese, and improve access to vaccines, such as those against Newcastle disease in poultry. By reducing waste and increasing the value of animal products, farmers can generate more income and better nourish their families.
In Malawi, chickens are an important source of protein, income, and manure for crops. However, many of these animals die from a preventable disease: Newcastle disease (NCD). A simple vaccination can make a significant difference. That is why this project focuses on vaccinating chickens and training local animal health workers. The healthier the chickens, the stronger the livelihoods of the families who depend on them.
Thanks to the support of Wilde Ganzen, we are able to invest in knowledge, animal health, and market access — with a strong focus on women and young people. Wilde Ganzen supports this project not only financially, but also by working closely with local partners to build sustainable, long-term solutions. Through knowledge sharing, advice, and funding, they empower communities to take ownership of their own development — with particular attention to vulnerable groups such as women and youth. They are the key to lasting change.
