The United Nations has declared 2026 the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists. This is highly significant. Rangelands cover more than half of the Earth’s land surface, store vast amounts of CO₂, and are essential for climate resilience, biodiversity, and food security.

For generations, pastoralists have managed these landscapes with their animals. By moving with their herds according to the seasons, they allow rangelands to recover and remain productive. Pastoralism is therefore a sustainable and proven land-use system, particularly in dry regions where crop farming is not possible.

However, rangelands worldwide are under increasing pressure due to climate change, land degradation, and restrictions on access to land and natural resources. At the same time, the role of pastoralists in sustainable land management is still undervalued, even though more than 200 million people directly depend on this way of life.

The International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists presents an opportunity to change this. Together with our international network, VSF International, we have published a manifesto calling for the protection of rangelands, strengthening animal health, and recognising the role of pastoralists as essential to sustainable food systems and a resilient climate.

Together, we can contribute to healthy rangelands, strong communities, and a sustainable future.
