Rabies is one of the most deadly and contagious diseases in the world. It affects animals and can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected animal. By vaccinating dogs, we can prevent people from becoming infected with the rabies virus.
In Malawi, rabies is a major problem. Almost all infections are caused by dog bites. To stop the spread of the virus, at least 70% of dogs need to be vaccinated each year.
Since March 2022, we have been working together with our local partner, Center for Community Empowerment Initiatives (CCEI), to fight rabies in northern Malawi. Thanks to the support of the Edgard & Cooper Foundation we have already vaccinated more than 100,000 dogs. With additional support from the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) and the local government in Malawi, we organise large-scale vaccination campaigns. GARC provides valuable expertise and enables us to use the Rabies Vaccination Tracker, a tool that allows us to accurately monitor vaccination progress.
Our approach goes beyond vaccination alone. Together with local communities, we focus on awareness and prevention. Children are a key target group, as they often interact closely with dogs and take care of them. According to the World Health Organization, 40% of rabies cases affect children. By reaching children through schools, we not only educate them but also raise awareness across entire communities.
Our efforts in Malawi are strengthened through our collaboration with Vétérinaires Sans Frontières International. Since May 2022, the VSF network has vaccinated more than 340,800 dogs and cats and reached thousands of people, including schoolchildren, with education on rabies prevention. Through international collaboration with partners such as VSF and GARC, Veterinarians Without Borders Netherlands contributes to the global fight against rabies.
In the Netherlands, we support this mission through fundraising, knowledge sharing, and events such as the annual Run for Rabies. Through this sponsored run, VWB-Students raise funds for additional vaccinations and help save lives.Join us and support the fight against rabies.
